My relationship with Doctor Who has been a long and lovely one. Having grown up in the homeland of Doctor Who, I’ve been a fan since my parents randomly decided to tune in on “The End of the World” all the way back in 2005 when I was the small, innocent and impressionable age of 10! Immediately, the thing I loved about Doctor Who the most were the characters. The amazingly written characters – the Doctor and his companion, best friends travelling through time and space! How can you get better than that for a TV show premise? Throughout Series 1, I fell in love with the combination of Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and the captivating writing of Russell T Davies, Steven Moffat and all of the others who worked on that brilliant revival series. In the gap between “The Parting of the Ways” and “The Christmas Invasion”. I literally got out every single Classic Who DVD from my local library and watched a few stories of all the Classic Doctors – from then on I’ve been hooked for 11 years and counting. From William Hartnell to Peter Capaldi, I can proudly say that every Doctor is amazing in my eyes – in his own individual way. ^_^

So naturally, my love of the show and my love of the characters inspired me to want to look like them and dress like them. Not to mention I was inspired to even start cosplaying by seeing other Whovian cosplayers out there! My first time was almost 4 years ago. My mother had knitted me a Fourth Doctor-styled scarf so I took that, raided my wardrobe and put together a makeshift Season 12 Fourth Doctor costume! And that started me on the way to where I am today! Nowadays, cosplay has taken over my wardrobe entirely.

I mainly focus on the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors, but I have costumes for the Fourth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and Tenth Doctors pretty much done! As for the Eleventh Doctor, I’ve spent a lot of time perfecting his Series 7B and Victorian looks. I just love that majestic purple frock coat, which of course I can thank Abbyshot for! And as for the Twelfth, I’m extremely proud of it as I’ve done a cosplay of most of his costumes – even going as far as to obtain the screen-accurate AllSaints hoodies (owww, right in the bank!) to making my own version of the Paul Smith Listen jumper. If I were to statistically count it up, I have around 13 different Twelfth Doctor variants and 8 Eleventh Doctor variants. Told ya. My wardrobe’s practically exploding. I’ve even started on a Bill cosplay because… well, “Afros are cool”. XD

There’s something about Peter Capaldi which is just so addictive. He’s amazing. I met him at the Festival and he’s one of the nicest people I have ever met!! I even got my grey hair spray dust on his jacket by complete accident which nearly gave me a heart attack, but he simply brushed it off as “Old age dust”! The man is a legend. I love him, and I love his Doctor!

One of the loveliest things that happened to me at a con was when I was cosplaying the Old Eleventh Doctor from “Time of the Doctor”. This little kid, no older than say, 5, came up to me and started treating me like I was ACTUALLY the Doctor! He hugged me, I let him play the Doctor by handing him my Sonic Screwdriver, and he even asked me “Where’s Clara?” It was simply adorable. <3

Ultimately, I would say that Doctor Who has without a doubt changed my life. It got me into cosplay and I’ve met so, so many new friends through it which I am forever thankful for. I encourage others to do the same! Have fun, be happy, and make friends, all in the name of the Doctor, or whoever else you choose!
