Calling All Replicants!
AbbyShot's design team is looking for some help from the Blade Runner community. We need some detailed photos of Deckard's trenchcoat to assist our design team to make this fan favourite become an AbbyShot reality!!

The Director's cut DVD is awesome, but many of the scenes featuring Deckard's coat are quite dark, making it difficult to extract the detail neccesary to make an AbbyShot version of the coat.

If you have 'behind the scenes' photos or images taken from the auction, please post them in AbbyShot's Suggestions Forum or email them to info@abbyshot.com.

Behind the Scenes: Interview with a Designer
A lot of discussion has been generated from the '?? Coat' that AbbyShot has developed over the last number of months. This design marks a number of "first's" for the company. It is the first design that is inspired by a video game and the first with a hood.

Another AbbyShot 'first' coming from this design is the tremendous amount of interest and the diversity of opinions about the elements of this design. We felt the best way to address the comments raised on our forum, and on other sites was to go right to the source of AbbyShot's '?? Coat'. The following is an interview with AS design team member, Bryce:

AS: What were your first impressions of the 'Unknown' character?

B: I remember thinking that the character was pretty cool, It's such a wicked looking coat. I feel it is a unisex design with the tapered waist and flared sleeves. My favourite part of the coat is the hood. The beads are a nice touch too. Overall, I think it's a deadly coat.

AS: Typically, AbbyShot has chosen to re-create designs from films, how does a re-created design from a video game differ?

B: In a movie, a costume designer is responsible for making an actors costume look the same throughout the shoot. There's also a person who double checks everything. So you get the same garment, or one that looks the same, in every scene. When I started researching the video game I noticed that there were some differences between the screen captures. The placement of the zipper, the length of the necklace, and the length of the drawstrings on the hood vary from picture to picture. I'm not a video game expert, but I think the differences are the result of having artists sketch the characters for each scene in the game, so each one is a little bit different. I know the fans want me to put as many elements of the character into this design as possible, so the biggest challenge is to please everyone.

AS: Are there other issues that come from re-creating a garment from a video game?

B: There are a few. Fabric is going hang the way that it wants to. When you look at the hood and some of the other elements of the coat, it's just very difficult to make the fabric look the way that a costume on an animated character hangs. When the animators move the character's costume, those movements are just an interpretation of how a real coat would move... but it's not a real coat. It's so hard to make a real garment move, look, and act like someone's animation. I had similar choices to make when I designed the Stampede Duster, which is also based on an animated character.

AS: Could you describe your work on this coat?

B: Well, the design was initially started by Mandy [Editor's note: Mandy was a designer at AbbyShot for most of 2003. She left the company to travel and teach in Asia late last year]. She researched and developed this design, the early sample coat photos on our site were from her work. I just had to make a few minor changes for the fans on the forum. I give all the credit to Mandy.

AS: Were there specific design elements that were more difficult?

B: Finding the right beads took a lot of time. Research always does take a while. I'm really impressed with the beads that Mandy found, I think they're as close as we could get to the real thing and still keep the price down. The hood was a challenge, too. We spent a lot of time getting the right shape and drape to it.

AS: The forum has been really active about this design, have you found it to be a useful tool for your research?

B: It was great! Whenever we needed photos or videos or anything we just asked the crowd on the forum. They have been so helpful!

AS: Thanks, Bryce.

B: Thanks.

New Lobby Reloaded Design
As a part of AbbyShot's commitment to deliver the most screen accurate, and high quality garments available, our Design has team gathered all of your suggestions on how to improve our popular Lobby Reloaded design and they developed a new pattern!!

New design for AbbyShot's best Matrix coat, the Lobby Reloaded Wool

The new pattern was drafted and earlier this month a sample was made!! We have photos to share! Note the new design of the back, the skirt and larger single welt pockets.

The sample was made using our Italian wool, (see photos) but this new design will be available in Twill and Commander as well. Customers ordering a Lobby Reloaded after February 6th/04 will have a choice between the new design and the old one. Customers who placed Lobby Reloaded orders that have not yet been filled will be contacted by Adam in the next few business days to determine whether the new or old pattern should be used.

A special thanks to everyone on the forum, and those who called and emailed us, to make this already impressive design even better!! Particularily "Ryukumon" :)
